For those moments when I think I’m all that and that I will live forever: holy ashes.
Ashes to remind me that I came from dust and that to dust I shall return, no matter what, and that I’d better make sure that whatever I do in-between makes me worthy of eternal life. That’s what I call a thumbfull-of-ashes with a message.
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and, if we wish to do so, we may receive the ashes that are a symbol of penance and that help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. It marks the beginning of a season of reflection which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. A time of year I use to revamp my faith (pretty easy) and practice being a better person (ay, not so easy). Those ashes, that are an outward sign of my sinfulness and need for penance, set me in motion.
I pray the ashes you choose to receive tomorrow mark more than just your foreheads. I pray they mark your hearts. Have a blessed Lent season my dear friends and family.
Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return.
