Thankful for the memories. “It’s a Small World” turns 50. I’m not gonna lie, the catchy tune drives me nuts now (how many of us haven’t gotten stuck in the ride? The boat stops but the music doesn’t!) As you get older, you either love it or hate it. But I can’t deny that it’s been part of many great memories for me. Just recently, my daughter and I videoselfied our sing-along while on the ride (I’ll spare you from that here). Yes, it was close to midnight, yes, it was part delirium, but, the ride was, once again, part of a memory maker. And today, for that I am thankful.
Here’s a video Disney put out in honor of the ride’s milestone celebration (go ahead, you know you wanna sing it

Today, all Disney Parks will celebrate the attraction’s 50th anniversary with a global sing-along by guests and cast members. Fans have been recording videos singing the song and uploading them to SmallWorld50.com. Disney will donate $1 to UNICEF for every video uploaded (up to $100,000) plus an additional donation of $150,000. You can also build a doll in the image of the It’s a Small World dolls and Disney will donate a buck to UNICEF for that, too.
Oh, my! I remember when that ride was brand-spanking new, going to DisneyLand to celebrate a B in math (MAJOR accomplishment for me) and standing in a loooong line with both my parents and a friend from school. Yep, it got stuck and yep, the music went on and on and on. My dad asked my mom for some Kleenex and proceeded to rip the Kleenex up and stuff them in his ears, didn’t work. So he started to sing along … with the Kleenex still stuffed in his ears. Driving home that night he told mom he was still hearing the music in his head, so mom, my friend and I burst into “It’s a Small World.” He threatened to leave us on the side of the freeway … Laughing as I type this, amiga, thanks for bringing back some really good and funny memories!
DITTO!!! The good part of that “musical?” memory is that it takes me to a special place with my two sons! 🙂 The not-so-good part is that my husband hates it when I add a metal music box to my collection that plays that tune! 🙁
